There’s imbalance in giving and receiving. Generosity without boundaries breeds resentment.
Giving is how you stay in charge of the relationship. Receiving would make you even.
You give at work: time, cover, credit, and you keep the ledger of it. Generosity with a ledger is a loan.
Who do you expect something back from at work, and have you told them?
Either ask for it plainly this week or write off the debt.
The money between you and someone is not balanced, and you both know it, and nobody says it. Silence is the interest on it.
Who owes whom, and what would happen if you said the number?
Say the number this week.
You give more than you get and you have decided that is who you are. It is a role, not a fact, and it is breeding something under the generosity.
What do you want back that you have decided is unreasonable to ask for?
Ask for one thing this week, without earning it first.
You are deciding based on who has helped you and who owes you. Fair is not the same as right.
What would you decide if nobody was owed anything?
Decide that way this week.
You are generous with everyone but yourself. The giving looks like kindness. Some of it is a way to never be the one who needs.
What do you give away that you needed to keep?
Keep it this week, once.
You give the work away for free, for exposure, for goodwill. Some of that is generosity. Some of it is not believing it is worth paying for.
What would you charge if you believed the work was good?
Charge it once this month.
